Over 150 years ago, Martin Wambsgan inspired an act of bravery that continues to be remembered to this day. In 1864, the 90th New York Infantry, 900 strong, fought in the Battle of Cedar Creek during the Civil War, where defeat was on the horizon. As the flag bearer was shot and fell, so did the soldiers’ morale and will to fight. Wambsgan witnessed the flag bearer’s demise and without hesitation, picked up the flag and ran it in front of his troops. This act of fearlessness led his men to the last charge of the battle, resulting in victory.
Later in 1896, he received a Congressional Medal of Honor for this heroic act of bravery during the Civil War. This medal can now be found at the Onondaga Historical Association.
900 Strong and The Last Charge were crafted in honor of Martin Wambsgan, who was Co-Owner, Ginny Martin’s great-grandfather. Just like this story, our aged spirits have been passed on from generation to generation. First being barreled over 10 years ago by Co-Owner, Bill Martin, these spirits were now finished off and bottled by the next generation, Zach Martin (Bill’s nephew).
We invite you to taste our family’s piece of history with our limited release 900 Strong Apple Brandy (aged 12 years & 41 days) and The Last Charge Honey Spirit (aged 10 years & 343 days). Each bottle comes with a hand-embossed leather coaster exclusive to these two premium spirits.
Both spirits are available at all Montezuma Winery & Hidden Marsh Distilery tasting rooms.
